Box Score
The battle of the top two teams in the country saw No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul knock off the undefeated No. 1 University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team 3-2 in St. Paul Friday night.
The match-up of the nation's best went just as one would expect: a back-and-forth battle both in game and match score with 21 ties and 10 lead changes. The five-set affair fell the way of Concordia (12-1, 4-0 NSIC) and marked the second time UMD (12-1, 3-1 NSIC) has acquired all five sets all season, and the first for the Golden Bears.
The tone of the match was set early as the teams traded points in game one. Trailing 5-4 in the early going, the Bulldogs went on a five-point run on the serve of
Sheenagh Caroline. The Bulldogs nursed the lead through the rest of the set before finally escaping with a 25-23 lead.
The second set again saw UMD take an early lead with a trio of three-point runs, leading 15-11 before the Golden Bears went on a 14-1 run on the serves of seniors Kayla Koenecke and Erienne Lauersdorf to take the second game 25-16.
The third set saw the Bulldogs dash away on an 11-1 run of their own to lead 17-9. Senior outside hitter
Kate Lange had three straight kills at one point and moved into fourth all-time at UMD with 1,661st career kill. Concordia again took control of the match with an 8-1 run, again during Koenecke and Lauersdorf's serve, but the Bulldogs held on for a 25-22 game victory.
The fourth set seemed to have no such significant run until Concordia turned a 17-16 lead into a 23-16 lead. UMD scored four of the last six points, but the Golden Bears held on for the 25-20 lead.
Concordia continued its run in the fifth set to knock off the Bulldogs 15-8 and take the match 3-2.
Lange finished with 21 kills to lead UMD. Sophomore middle blocker
Monica Turner added 13 of her own as the only other Bulldog in double figures for kills, but a trio added nine apiece. Four Golden Bears hit double digits in kills, led by Lauersdorf with 17.
Sophomore setter Ashely Hinsch notched 53 assists in the match. Junior libero
Julie Rainey led UMD with 24 digs, while Lange completed a double-double with 15 kills of her own. Junior outside hitter
Katie Ledwell also hit double-digit digs with 16.
The No. 1 Bulldogs won't have much time to regroup as they travel to Minn. State Mankato for another tough conference match-up. Opening serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
