BULLDOGS TO HONOR A PAIR OF PAST STANDOUT TEAMS THIS FALL

The Bulldogs captured the 2002 NSIC trophy and capped off a perfect 11-0 regular season after throttling nationally-ranked Winona State 42-25 before an overflow home crowd of 5,238 (then the second largest in program history).
The first University of Minnesota Duluth football team to go 11-0 during the regular season and the last club to lay claim to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship will both be recognized by the Bulldogs this fall at James S. Malosky Stadium.

The 2002 Bulldogs will be the UMD's honored guests on Sept. 21 when it takes on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference arch-rival Minnesota State University-Mankato in the annual Hall of Fame game. In addition to completing the regular season with an unblemished record, that unit also earned an NCAA Division II playoff berth (a program first), captured their first NSIC title in six years with a 9-0 mark and shattered or equaled some 60 school game, season and career records.

On UMD's Homecoming clash with St. Cloud State University  on Oct. 5, it will be the 1973 team's turn to be back in the spotlight. Thirty years ago, the Bulldogs ended the season on a six-game winning streak to go 8-1 overall and claim a share of the MIAC crown. Only a heart-breaking 14-12 loss to Augsburg College in Week Three prevented UMD from posting its first-ever unbeaten, untied season. The Bulldogs featured a defense which gave up just 8.7 points per game (and never more than 14 in one single outing) and a roster that included three future A.P. Little All-Americans (running backs Terry Egerdahl and Ted McKnight and defensive back Mark Johnson). McKnight went on to enjoy a six-year career in the National Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bils.
