The last University of Minnesota Duluth team to claim a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, as well some 40-plus past team captains, will be the Bulldogs' honored guests this Saturday when the No. 13 Bulldogs and No. 18 St. Cloud State University Huskies square off in UMD's annual Homecoming Game.
In addition to capturing a share of the MIAC title, the 1973 Bulldogs closed out the year riding a six-game winning streak to finish 8-1 overall. Only a heart-breaking 14-12 home loss to Augsburg College three weeks into the year prevented UMD from posting its first unbeaten, untied season in program history. The Bulldogs, who would join forces with the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (now the NSIC) three years later, featured a defense that surrendered just 8.7 points per game -- and never more than 14 points in any one outing -- and a roster that included three future Associated Press Little All-Americans in running backs Terry Egerdahl and Ted McKnight and defensive back Mark Johnson. McKnight went on to enjoy a six-year National Football League career with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
Saturday's kick off is set for 1 p.m.
