Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth made its shots count Saturday night and the University of Nebraska Omaha didn't. The Bulldogs have
Aaron Crandall to thank for that.
The senior goaltender racked up 52 saves -- the most stops by a Bulldog in nearly seven years -- while backstopping UMD to a 3-1 road victory and a sweep of its two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with the Mavericks. With the sweep, their first of the season and first away from Duluth since last December, the Bulldogs improved to 9-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the NCHC.
Crandall, who stopped 90 of 93 shots on the weekend, is now 3-0-0 lifetime against the Mavericks with a 1.00 goals against average and a .976 saves percentage. He made 40 of his saves over the final two periods of play Saturday en route to becoming the first Bulldog to crack the 50-stop mark since Josh Johnson did it (62 saves) in a 3-2 triple overtime WCHA playoff setback at St. Cloud State on March 11, 2007.
Just as they had the previous night when they prevailed 3-2, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission, getting goals from senior right winger
Joe Basaraba with 7:36 to go in the first period and his linemate, junior center
Caleb Herbert at the 7:20 mark of the second. Basaraba scored after being left unattended in the low slot and getting a feed from sophomore left winger
Austin Farley while Herbert bolted around around a UNO defender and wristed in a shot just outside the front of the UNO goalmouth. Those two then worked a 2-on-1 to perfection midway through the third period with Basaraba cashing in on his fifth goal of the season and putting the Bulldogs up 3-0. Jake Guentzel spoiled Crandall's shut out by scoring with 3:50 left in regulation.
On the night, the Bulldogs wound up with just 13 shots, but scored twice on the first eight of those and once on the two they mustered the entire third period.
UMD will be return to AMSOIL Arena next Friday and Saturday night for another pair of NCHC bouts with the University of Denver.
NOTES: The last time a UMD goaltender made 50 or more saves in a regulation game victory was Bill Perkl, who finished with 51 stops in the Bulldogs' 8-7 triumph at Wisconsin on Nov. 9, 1979 ... In series rematch games this season, the Bulldogs are 6-2-1 ... Sophomore defenseman
Andy Welinski was credited with an assist on
Caleb Herbert's goal, which extended his personal scoring streak to a career-high five games ... UMD has compiled a 6-4-0 road record thus far in 2013-14 ... Herbert figured in on all three Bulldog goals Saturday and finished a +3 while sophomore left winger
Austin Farley was credited with two assists ...
Joe Basaraba now has a pair of two-goal nights to his career credit and both have come at the expense of Omaha.
