The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team has never had fewer than two current or former players on the Swedish Olympic Team, and it will be no different for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
Former UMD stars forward Pernilla Winberg, goaltender Kim Martin (Hasson), and defenseman Jenni Asserholt all became two and three-time Olympians after Sweden announced its official roster Tuesday. Â For Martin, it marks her fourth Olympic team, winning silver in 2006 as the highlight, along with Winberg, who will be skating in her third games. Â Martin was an Olympian in 2002, 2006 and 2010 previously, Winberg in 2006, 2010 and Asserholt was an Olympian in 2010.
The three boost UMD's Olympic count for Sochi to nine current and former Bulldogs who will represent five different countries. Â Not included in that total is Russia, which is expected to name both Aleksandra Vafina and Iya Gavrilova to its final roster.
Fans can watch both of UMD's current Olympians
Lara Stalder (Switzerland) and
Tea Villila (Finland) this weekend at AMSOIL Arena in their last home action before they leave for Sochi. Â The Bulldogs host Ohio State University on Saturday and Sunday at 3:07 p.m.
