BULLDOGS BATTLE BACK, BUT FALL 3-2 IN OVERTIME TO DENVER FRIDAY

Austin Farley sends Denver's Josiah Didier flying with a check in front of the scorer's bench Friday
Box Score After rallying from a two goals down with seven minutes to go in regulation and forcing overtime, the University of Minnesota Duluth was poised to complete a signature comeback win. Or, at the very least, come away with some National Collegiate Hockey Conference points.

Then Quentin Shore had to go and ruin things.

The sophomore center scored with 46 seconds remaining in overtime to give No. 16 Denver a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs Friday night before a crowd of 6,204 at AMSOIL Arena. The loss dropped UMD to 9-9-0 on the year and 5-6-0-0 in the NCHC and also put the clamps on a three-game winning streak.

Denver (12-7-4 overall; 6-4-1-1 NCHC) parlayed a pair of UMD turnovers in the Bulldogs' defensive zone into goals at 13:15 of the second period (by Zac Larazza) and 12:59 of the third (by Matt Marcinew) before UMD struck twice in a two minute span exactly three minutes later. Junior center Caleb Herbert got the first of those two goals with a blast from the slot off a feed from senior right winger Joe Basaraba while sophomore center Tony Cameranesi caught Denver goaltender Sam Brittain out of position and fired a shot in below the left face off circle for the equalizer.

"At the end of the third period, we finallly started to play with some urgency," said Bulldog head coach Scott Sandelin. "We hadn't done a whole lot offensively up to that point."

Senior Aaron Crandall, who turned back all but three of the 93 shots he faced last weekend in the Bulldogs' series sweep of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, finished with 26 saves in the setback. Brittain was credited with 25 stops for Denver, now unbeaten in 13 of its last 15 games (9-2-4).

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.

"We just have to take the positives away from tonight -- especially the latter part of the third period -- and get back at it tomorrow," said Herbert.

Notes: UMD is 0-1-1 in overtimes this season and hasn't won a game that's gone past regulation since the 2012 WCHA playoffs ... sophomore defenseman Andy Welinski extended his scoring streak to six games with an assist on UMD's first goal ... Bulldog opponents have gone just 1-for-26 on the power play over the past six games. Denver went scoreless on all four of its attempts with the man advantage ... The Bulldogs are 3-7-0 on Friday nights this season and 6-2-1 in rematch games ... Freshman left winger Kyle Osterberg was sidelined with an upper body injury Friday and sophomore Charlie Sampair, who moved up to Osterberg's spot on UMD's top line was injured on his first shift of the night and didn't return ... Caleb Herbert, who picked up his fifth goal of the season, took over sole possession of the top spot on UMD's scoring charts with 14 points.
