Box Score The largest home crowd in the 70-year history of University of Minnesota Duluth hockey was treated to a couple of historic program firsts Saturday night.
Not only did the Bulldogs take part in their first National Collegiate Hockey Conference shootout, but they racked up their first shootout victory at the expense of the University of Denver in front of 6,889 specatators at AMSOIL Arena. The Bulldogs and No. 16 Pioneers skated to a 2-2 overtime before claiming the shootout, 2-1, in four rounds on goals by
Alex Iafallo and
Caleb Herbert.
Iafallo also scored twice in regulation, roofing a backhand at 7:29 of the first period, which put UMD up 1-0, and then taking a pass from junior right winger
Adam Krause and burying a shot from the low slot to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with 6:30 to go in regulation. Quentin Shore, who scored the overtime goal for Denver in its 3-2 win Friday night, got the equalizer 78 seconds later.
UMD peppered Denver goaltender Sam Brittain with 42 shots -- two off its 2013-14 high -- and held the Pioneers scoreless on the power play (0-for-3) for the second straight night. Denver came into the weekend sporting the nation's fourth best power play unit.
"I really thought we deserved three points tonight," said Bulldog senior goaltender
Aaron Crandall, who finished with 34 saves. "We'll take the two points, but to make hay in this league, you really need three. That being said, I'm still happy with the outcome."
The Bulldogs (9-9-2 overall; 5-5-1-1 NCHC) will be at the Xcel Energy next Friday afternoon to take on former Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival Minnesota State University-Mankato in the first round of the inaugural North Star College Cup.
Notes: UMD is winless (0-3-7) in its last 10 overtime games, a drought which dates back to the end of 2012 WCHA Final Five .... sophomore
Andy Welinski was credited with an assist, which pushed his scoring streak to seven games ... Bulldog opponents are 1-for-26 with the man advantage over the past seven games ...
Adam Krause assisted on both Iafallo's goals and he, along with Iafallo and their linemate, rookie center
Dominic Toninato, all finished the night at +2 ... The Bulldogs put up 11 shots before Denver got its first, on the power play, with 9:07 left in the first period.
