Senior forward
Maureen Stormont netted her 14th goal of the season to claim the University of Minnesota Duluth program record for goals in a career outright, while senior
Megan Helberg's header in the 87th minute lifted the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over Concordia University, St. Paul on Senior Day at Malosky Stadium Sunday.
UMD (7-9-0, 7-6-0 NSIC) brought home three much-needed points in a tight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference playoff hunt, while Concordia-St. Paul (4-10-2, 3-8-2 NSIC) has now lost four of its last five in the closing minutes of games or overtime.
HIGHLIGHTS• Stormont's tally in the 23rd minute marked number 53 for her career, and head coach
Greg Cane and the previous record holder, assistant coach Jen Warrick Reierson, presented her with a game ball at half time in addition to the senior day festivities honoring all 11 of the Bulldog graduating players.
• Senior midfielder
Jennifer Smith assisted on each of UMD's goals and now stands alone for third all-time in that category with 26 for her career. Her 56 career points sit just three back of entering the top-ten all-time in scoring at UMD. Stormont, now with 124 points in her career, sits just one point back of Reierson for most in that category.
Neither team made much of a splash in the early going as the ball rarely saw its way across either 30-yard line in the opening minutes. The Bulldogs would eventually take control of the first half, out-shooting CU 6-1 while also having four corner kicks to zero for the Golden Bears. Stormont ended the drama of her record chase at the 23:11 mark of the first half with a booming high-angle shot to the far post, and UMD took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Concordia proved why they have been in nearly every match this season by striking back with an equalizer in the 65th minute. Senior midfielder Sam McBain got an open look on a pass from sophomore Chelsie Lindsay and put it past a diving
Marissa Rosa to tie the score. The match seemed destined for overtime, but the Bulldogs amounted their chances late in the game. Finally, a corner kick by Smith was placed perfectly for Helberg to head the ball just inside the post and give UMD a lead it would not relinquish. CU junior goalkeeper Emma Gartner would finish with three saves on the match, while Rosa had one for the Bulldogs. Concordia finished with just six shots, led by Lindsay with two.
UP NEXTUMD will close out the home portion of its season on Friday afternoon for a Halloween NSIC tilt with Bemidji State University. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
