LATE GOAL DOES IN BULLDOGS IN 4-3 SETBACK TO ST. CLOUD STATE SATURDAY NIGHT

Dominic Toninato crashes the St. Cloud State net in search of a rebound at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center
Box Score For whatever the reason, the University of Minnesota Duluth has not enjoyed a whole lot of recent success 1.) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center or 2.) coming back from second-intermission deficits. The Bulldogs appeared close to possibly reversing their fortunes on both fronts Saturday night, but Jonny Brodzinski put the kibosh on those hopes.

The St. Cloud State University sophomore right winger buried a shot between the two face off circles with 1:49 to go in the third period to give the No. 6 Huskies a 4-3 victory and a sweep of their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with the No. 16 Bulldogs. UMD, which was 1-11-2 in its last 14 visits to St. Cloud coming into the night, trailed 3-1 at the game's midpoint before getting two unanswered goals, including rookie left winger Alex Iafallo's equalizer five minutes into the third period.

The two long-time instrastate adversaries traded first-period goals with Jimmy Murray scoring just 30 seconds in before junior center Caleb Herbert answered for the Bulldogs (13-11-4 overall; 8-8-2-2 in the NCHC) at the 18:09 mark. Herbert skated down the left side, slipped through a pair of Husky defenders and backhanded in his eighth goal of the year through the five hole of St. Cloud State goaltender Ryan Faragher. The Huskies, 5-3 winners on Friday night, struck twice  in the first seven minutes of the seven period, but Dominic Toninato got one of the goals back at 10:41 when Iafallo scooped up a St. Cloud State turnover and dished the puck to the rookie center in the low slot. UMD, which now hasn't posted a win in the last 39 games its trailed heading into the third period (0-36-3), drew even a little less than a minute into a 5-on-3 power play on Iafallo's bomb from the top of inside the right point.

Senior Aaron Crandall (11-8-3) made 34 saves, including 13 each in the first two periods while Faragher had 38 stops. UMD reached the 40-shot mark for the second straight night, closing the evening with a 41-38 advantage.

UMD will return to AMSOIL Arena this Friday and Saturday night (Feb. 21-22) for a pair of NCHC engagements with the University of North Dakota.

NOTES: Caleb Herbert, who also picked up an assist in the 4-3 setback, upped his career-high scoring streak to seven games. All eight of Herbert's goals this season have come in even-strength situations  ... St. Cloud State is now the last team to sweep the Bulldogs both at home (which it did back in December) and on the road ... Aaron Crandall has made 13 consecutive starts in goal for the Bulldogs and UMD has suffered just three losses during that stretch (7-3-3) ... UMD was 1-of-4 on the power play and held the Huskies scoreless on their only man advantage opportunity of the evening.
