BULLDOGS TAME TIGERS TO TAKE THREE IN SECOND DAY OF UMD INVITATIONAL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Sophomore pitcher Cayli Sadler and the University of Minnesota Duluth made a statement Monday in the Minnesota Duluth Invitational. Not only did Sadler come back to finish off No. 14 Fort Hays State in the final two innings of the suspended game from Sunday, but she returned to the circle to shut the Tigers down again in the showdown. Sadler, the Brooklyn Park, Minn. native, single-handedly shut down the Tigers. In the two games, Sadler combined for 15 strikeouts, shattering 13 hits and allowing only three runs for a 1.75 ERA. In the 4-2 victory, Sadler toss a season-high 11 strikeouts.

The Bulldogs, previously up 3-2 before play stopped, added a much-needed insurance run by sophomore infielder Sami Schnyder in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 4-2 win then used a six-run fifth inning capped off by a three-run homer by junior infielder Jordan Rice to blow away FHSU 11-1. Rice and sophomore infielder Ashley Schilling torched the Tigers in the scheduled Monday game with identical 2-for-4 performances. Rice and Schilling each had plated in three runs and scored a twice of their own.

"Cayli dominated the 14th-ranked team in the nation," said Head Coach Jen Banford. "She did a great job of mixing pitches and keeping a very good team to only three runs in two games. She stepped up to the challenge and delivered in a big way."

UMD started Day 2 matched up against the University of Mary. Tied at three in the seventh, Mary scored seven runs for 10-3 advantage and forced the Bulldogs into a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Mary went 4-1 during the two-day tournament. Sophomore catcher Ashley Lewis was the only batter to notch a pair of hits (2-for-2) versus the Marauders. Freshman outfielder Hailey Lundquist drove in the then-game tying runs with her 2-run double.

"We should have had five wins this weekend but we executed poorly near the end of the Mary game and let the game slip away from us," said Banford. "Overall, it wasn't a bad weekend. Its good to grab four wins this week against good competition."

The Bulldogs concluded the invitational with a 9-0 rout of Lincoln University. Yesterday UMD scored 12 times in the first but only put up a five-spot on the board today. Rice homer again to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. A few batters later sophomore infielder Abbey Nelson grounded in a run then freshman pitcher Mariah Schultz helped herself at the plate, driving two in with a double to right field.

Schultz, the native of Lewiston, Minn., tossed a four-hit shutout against the Blue Tigers to capture her second win of her career and net UMD a 4-1 record in the UMD Invitational.

The Bulldogs are back in the dome, where they are 19-1 dating back to last year, again to square off against Concordia University, St.Paul in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, March 3.
