Box Score Aaron Crandall made his final regular season road appearance as a collegian a most memorable one. The University of Minnesota Duluth fifth-year senior netmineder turned aside all 30 shots Miami University sent his way Saturday night to backstop the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory and a sweep of their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with the host RedHawks.
Crandall, who earlier this week was chosen as one of 18 candidates for the inaugural
Mike Richter Award as the most outstanding goalie in NCAA men's hockey, also played a key part in holding Miami scoreless on all five of its power play chances en route to registering his fifth collegiate shut out and first since a 6-0 blanking of the University of Nebraska Omaha on March 9, 2013 in Duluth. He made exactly one half of his stops in the opening 20 minutes of play when the RedHawks outshot UMD, 15-12.
The Bulldogs, now 15-13-4 overall and 10-10-2-2 in the NCHC, got the only scoring they would need 9:05 into the second period when
Kyle Osterberg took a feed from junior right winger
Justin Crandall in the high slot and one-timed a bomb for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Osterberg, a freshman left winger from Lakeville, Minn., helped set up three goals in UMD's 5-4 win Friday night in Oxford, Ohio.
UMD, which won seven of its final nine NCHC road engagements and is 11-6-1 away from Duluth this winter, will host Nebraska Omaha next Friday and Saturday night in the regular season finales for both clubs. The Bulldogs currently hold a share of fourth place with Western Michigan in the NCHC standings.
