BULLDOGS BLANK DRAGONS TWICE TUESDAY

The University of Minnesota Duluth got back to their sweeping ways at the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center Tuesday by blanking Minnesota State University-Moorhead twice (10-0 in five inningand 4-0 in) in a pair non-conference engagements to improve to 11-6 on the year.

The Dragons, who were making their 2014 debuts, got smothered by the pitching duo of sophmore Cayli Sadler and freshman Sam Hartmann. Sadler picked up her seventh and eighth wins of the season including a shorten-complete game shutout, her fifth shutout of her career, in game one. The native of Brooklyn Park, Minn. recorded her second 10-plus strikeout outing of the season. After getting roughed up in her previous appearence, freshman Sam Hartmann got back in the flow during the rematch, going four strong innings allowing no runs on two hits and four punch outs before handing the ball back to Sadler to close out the game.

In the opener, the Bulldogs, who are 9-0 this season when scoring first, pounced out to the lead in the third on an RBI single to center by sophomore outfielder Ashley Schilling to score senior infielder Brooke Neuroth, who led off the inning with an double. Freshman outfielder Hailey Lundquist followed up a few batters later with a two-out, two-run single back up the middle. The persuing inning, Schilling and Lundquist teammed up again. Schilling unleashed a two-run homer to right field and Lundquist doubled in two more. Schilling went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs and Lundquist finished the game 2-for-3 and drove in four runs. 

The run production dried up in game two until the latter innings. Sophmore Ashley Lewis broke the scoreless tie in the fifth and freshman Angel Dahl doubled the lead on a single. Sophomore Sami Schnyder put the finishing touch on the clean-slate sweep with her second career home run, a 2-RBI blast to left center.

The Bulldogs will next do battle with East Central Oklahoma University on Sunday (March 16). That doubleheader, which is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Ada, Okla., marks the first leg of a five-day, eight-game tour of Oklahoma and Arkansas for UMD.
