The University of Minnesota Duluth split on its final day at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite, with West Chester University of Pennsylvania rallying in the late innings to down the Bulldogs 7-2 before UMD came back with a 4-1 win over Johnson University-Florida in the nightcap at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
In game one, UMD (4-6) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when freshman
Matt Vogt lifted a single to left field, scoring
Alex Wojciechowski (So./1B) and
Cody Aasen (Sr./LF). Junior righty
Wesley Mleziva tossed four shutout innings and sophomore lefty combined for seven strong innings, allowing just one run with eight strikeouts, including four straight by Conkel during the fifth and sixth innings. Max Ryan (1-1) the tough luck loss. WCUPA's Ron Scull (2-0) was the benficiary of the rally and some ninth-inning insurance, and shut out the Bulldogs with four strikeouts in the final two innings. Vogt, Aasen, and freshman second baseman
Skyler Wenninger had the most success for the Bulldogs with two hits each, with Vogt ripping a double in the sixth inning and Wenninger swiping his first bag of the season in the bottom of the second.
Sophomore
Matt Mattiacci (1-0) tossed seven shutout innings against Johnson U, scattering three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four to earn his first win of the season. Sophomore first baseman
Alex Wojciechowski was 2-of-4 on the night, scoring the game's first run on a fielding error in the first inning and driving in UMD's fourth and final run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth. The Bulldogs added insurance in the third and fifth innings with RBI singles by
Ryan Lakin and
Tyler Stein. The Suns broke through with an unearned run against sophomore
Kevin Stocke in the eighth, and threatened in the ninth, but freshman
Grant Farley shut the door with a pair of strikeouts to earn his first collegiate save.
UMD will hope to continue its momentum as the road trip continues this weekend when the Bulldogs open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play against Wayne State (Neb.) College (6-7) with a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday. Opening pitch each day is set for Noon in Wayne, Neb.
