After lighting up the University of Nebraska-Omaha for eight goals in a 8-2 victory Friday, the University of Minnesota Duluth found the scoring scarce in its National Collegiate Hockey Conference series rematch with the Mavericks. UNO, which had dropped five straight games to the No. 19 Bulldogs coming into Saturday, closed out the 2013-14 regular season by downing the UMD 4-1 before a crowd of 6,598 at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth.
Junior right winger
Justin Crandall's 11th goal of the season, which came midway through the first period and tied the game at 1-1, was all the offense the Bulldogs were able to generate while falling to the Mavericks for the first time since Nov. 11, 2012. UMD, which was looking to post its fourth series sweep in 2014, fell to 16-14-4 overall and finished 11-11-2-2 in the NCHC, good for a fourth-place tie with Western Michigan University. UMD will host the Broncos next weekend in a opening round best-of-three NCHC playoff series.
The two clubs took a 1-1 lead into the first intermission before the Mavericks (16-16-2 overall; 13-9-1-1 NCHC) struck twice in the second period and added an insurance goal in the third. They wound up outshooting the Bulldogs 31-28 on the night and went 1-or-4 on the power play while holding UMD scoreless on all three of its man advantage opportunities.
Goaltender
Aaron Crandall, one of five departing Bulldogs who were recognized prior to the game as part of UMD's Senior Night, was credited with 27 saves and lost for the first time in five lifetime starts against the Mavericks.
"Omaha played well, but that's kind of what we expected from them," said Bulldog head coach
Scott Sandelin. "I didn't expect what I was from our team, however. Lat night we pushed the pace of the game and tonight we sat back, we were cautious, and we lost a lot of battles against them. We just seemed disjointed for whatever reason."
