The University of Minnesota Duluth was the home team on the scoreboard, but Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Augustana (S.D.) College did not help the Bulldogs feel at home in Sioux Falls, sweeping a series-opening doubleheader 6-2 and 15-3 at Karras Park on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (7-17, 3-11 NSIC) would have to settle for individual victories on the day as the high-powered Viking offense out-muscled the Bulldogs.
Augustana (24-10, 14-4 NSIC) scored right away in the first inning off UMD's ace, sophomore
Bo Hellquist with a double by senior Tony Viger, and a three-run bomb in the third made it 4-0 before the Bulldogs added a pair of runs thanks to RBI singles by senior left fielder
Cody Aasen and sophomore third baseman
Jimmy Heck. The Vikings added a pair in the seventh as their ace right-hander Tyson Gau (Sr.) went the distance, striking out just three but scattering 10 hits to keep the Bulldogs from mounting a comeback. Hellquist also went seven innings for the Bulldogs, allowing just nine hits but six runs (five earned) and three walks as he fell to 1-4 on the season.
Game two saw Augustana leap ahead with six runs in the first inninng, so despite UMD scoring in the first three innings, the deck was stacked against the Bulldogs early. Heck continued his hot streak with a home run and a pair of runs batted in in game two, and freshman designated hitter
Grant Farley added a solo blast in the game. Senior right-hander
Max Ryan struck out four in four innings, but allowed nine hits and seven earned runs. Four Bulldog relievers combined for the final three innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs. Augustana knocked UMD for nine extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs, in the nightcap.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon as UMD hopes to reverse its fortune and gain a series split with Augustana. Opening pitch is set for Noon in Sioux Falls.
