Box Score 2 It was a memorable day at James S. Malosky Stadium as the University of Minnesota Duluth celebrated its first true Senior Day in three years. The Bulldog seniors didn't disappoint, leading UMD (23-17 overall, 9-6 Northern Sun Collegiate Conference) to a 4-2 walk-off win and a 5-3 victory in its league doubleheader against Minnesota State University-Moorhead (15-20; 11-15 NSIC), which came into the series on a six-game win streak.
In the opener, second baseman
cut the UMD deficit in half with an opposite field jack, keeping pace with Mullen for the team lead in that department. Two batters later, sophomore outfielder
Ashley Schilling drew the Bulldogs even with her fifth homer of the spring. The Bulldogs kept their foot on the offensive pedal one inning later when Schnyder led off with a ground rule double. One out later, Mullen then plated Schnyder with another double for her third RBI of the afternoon. Rice produced an RBI single in the next-at bat and Schilling gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead with a double that scored Rice. A home run to lead off the top of the seventh inning pulled the Dragons to within two, but the Bulldogs held on for a pivotal two-game sweep in their home finales.
UMD received a stellar pitching performance in game one from
Cayli Sadler as the workhorse sophomore gave up just three hits and struck out 10. Mullen got the start in the rematch -- just her second appearance of the year, and after a somewhat rough start, settled down and allowed just one hit and one earned run in four innings of work. She was replaced by Sadler, who went on to pick up the pitching win in relief while improving to 18-10 on the season.
The Bulldogs will head to St. Cloud, Minn., tomorrow (April 24) for a pair of afternoon NSIC clashes with St. Cloud State before wrapping up the 2014 regular season this Saturday and Sunday with doubleheaders at Concordia University-St. Paul and Minnesota State University-Mankato.
