Prior to this weekend, only two University of Minnesota Duluth long jumpers had ever reached the 7-meter barrier. Sophomore
Mark Emlaw added his name to that distinctive list Saturday afternoon at the Drake Alternative meet in St. Peter, Minn., with a leap of 7.01-meters (23'-00.00") to take third place and join current school record holder Kevin Lindell (1980) and 2014 UMD senior team captain
Nick Pedersen (2011) as the three Bulldogs to eclipse that milestone.
Emlaw was one of seven Bulldogs to register a top-5 individual placing at Saturday's event, which was held in windy conditions on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. Junior
Nick Moran continued to build on a stellar outdoor season by winning the discus throw (47.81 meters) in addition to snaring runnerup honors in the hammer throw (53.65 meters). In the shot put, sophomore
Appo Agbamu (14.31 meters) and freshman
Devin Sowers (14.13 meters) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while another rookie,
Seth Hare was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 10:16.28. Junior
Jacob Nelson placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.25) as did freshman
Gage Sachs in the 5,000-meter run (16:10.59).
Three meets await UMD this week: The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Decathlon Championships on Sunday and Monday, the Concordia University-St. Paul Twilight on Wednesday and Hamline University's Meet of the Unsaintly on Friday and Saturday. The NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place the following weekend (May 9-10) in Winona, Minn.
