With the Hamline University Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., called off because of snow, the University of Minnesota Duluth changed course to La Crosse, Wis., Saturday for the Ashton May Invitational where the Bulldogs took third place out of nine schools in the team standings.
Three Bulldogs -- junior
Dan Nielsen in the 5,000-meter run, senior
Nathan Knop in the javelin and freshman
Jason Lilja in the high jump -- captured individual titles at the event, which was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Nielsen clocked in at 15:11.45 to lead a 5,000-meter field that was loaded on the top end by fellow Bulldogs
Ted Heikkila (2nd place; 15:16.68), senior
Jason Coffin (4th; 15:20.50), freshmen
Mitch Fisher (5th; 15:32.50) and
Seth Hare (7th; 15:49.10) and sophomore
Drew Johnson (9th place; 15:55.27). Lilja went 6'-04.50" in the high jump and leaped 21'-08.00" in the long jump to take second. Knop was victorious thanks to a throw of 167'-01". Nielsen (9:35.68), Johnson (9:46.71) and junior
Aaron Handorff finished 4-5-6 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while rookie
Nick Krouse (40'-03.50" in the triple jump) and sophomore
Appo Agbamu (50'-07.25 inches in the shot put) each recorded third-place efforts. In the 800-meter run,
Phil d'Entremont was fourth with a time of 1:56.93 and in the discus throw, fellow UMD junior
Nick Moran's toss of 143'-11" was bettered by only four other competitors. Moran also wound up third in the hammer throw with a near-school record 187'-07" effort, which is a an NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the national championships.
UW-La Crosse (200 points) claimed the team championship and was followed by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (159), UMD (140) and the University of Wisconsin-Stout (58).
Members of the men's team will be traveling to various locations this week, as some members of the team will be competing at the Jim Duncan Invite on Friday and Saturday in Des Moines (Drake University), while others will competing at the Holst Invite in St, Paul, MN on Saturday (Concordia St. Paul).
James Ryan is scheduled to compete in a decathlon in Collegeville, MN on Saturday and Sunday, which is being hosted by St. John's University.
