It took until the end of the night for the University of Minnesota Duluth to have anything to celebrate Sunday after falling 5-0 in the opening half of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Southwest Minnesota State University, but the Bulldogs would enjoy a 6-5 game two win, with a walk-off "walk" plating the final run, to finish with a series split with the Mustangs in Minnetonka, Minn.

Held off the board in game one thanks a three-hit shutout by Southwest Minnesota's Mitch Wurm, UMD (7-15, 3-9 NSIC) would have to respond in game two with a more typical offensive output of the team averaging 4.6 runs per outing. The scoring was anything but typical, but the Bulldogs did get their runs to SMSU back to .500 at 12-12 (3-5 NSIC).

Scored unearned runs in the third and fourth innings with the lone RBI belonging to sophomore first baseman Alex Wojciechowski to go up 3-0, but  the Mustangs responded with a bases-loaded walk and a bases-clearing triple by Patrick Rients to plate four runs in the top of the fifth, and an RBI double by Austin Stubbs to extend its lead to 5-3 in the seventh. The freshmen got involved late in the game as designated hitter Grant Farley doubled in a row in the eight, and Matt Vogt another in the ninth to tie the game. Not looking for Farley (3-for-7 with a pair of extra-base hits on the day) to do more damage, Brandon Alfson walked the first-year outfielder intentionally, but sophomore utility man John Meyer drew a bases-loaded walk on the very next plate appearance to send the Bulldogs home with a victory.

Senior Chris Couilliad started the game for the Bulldogs but left after surrendering three runs in 4.2 innings. Sophomore Charlie Conkel (1-1) was the recipient of the late-game run support after tossing a hitless ninth inning.

In game one, sophomore Ryan Lakin (0-3) was the mound opponent for Wurm, striking out five in a complete game but a pair of home runs and an unearned score left him out of luck.

UMD is slated to open its home season this weekend with Augustana (S.D.) College, though weather and field conditions will determine where the games are played. Stay tuned for updates this week.
