Sophomore Bo Hellquist tossed a complete game shutout to get the University of Minnesota Duluth started on a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of the University of Minnesota, Crookston at UMC Baseball Field in Crookston on Saturday.

With victories of 5-0 and 21-8, UMD (16-23, 12-17 NSIC) now has two more wins than it did a year ago, and can match its NSIC win total from 2013 (14) by defeating the Golden Eagles (1-45, 0-34) in the season-ending doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.

Hellquist scattered six hits in his seven innings of work in game one, walking a pair, and striking out four to move to 4-4 on the season and dropping UMC starter Matt Korte to 0-10 on the year. Korte gave up all five Bulldog runs in six innings of work, allowing 11 hits and a walk. UMD had just a pair of extra-base hits, both doubles off the bat of junior catcher Beau Goff, who was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored, getting the Bulldogs on the board in the second inning with a single up the middle and closing out a three-run fifth with an RBI double.

Game two told a different story as Minnesota Crookston got on the board first and plated five unearned runs on the day against UMD senior starter Max Ryan thanks to four Bulldog errors. His squad would rally back, scoring multiple runs in the second, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings en route to a rout of the Golden Eagles. Sophomore first baseman Alex Wojciechowski was the offensive star of the game, 3-for-6 with five RBIs on a double and a home run. Senior pitcher Chris Couillard got in on the offensive action with a ninth-inning pinch-hit RBI double as one of 14 Bulldogs with at least a hit in the game and one of seven with a run batted in.

Despite the shaky start, Ryan would toss a complete game as well, allowing just six earned runs, striking out six and walking a pair to move to pull even at 3-3 on the season. Meanwhile, Golden Eagle starter Richie Navratil also dropped to 0-10 with 12 hits and eight earned runs allowed in 6.1 innings.

The same two teams will be back in action again tomorrow afternoon in the season finale. Opening pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for Noon in Crookston.
