NO. 6 BULLDOGS OFFENSIVELY BRAND MAVERICKS WITH 12-0 ROUT

Bulldog fans have to go back to 2002 for the last time a University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team shredded a scoreboard for 12 goals.

Yet that's just what the No. 6 Bulldogs did Friday night against Minnesota State University, Mankato at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn.  UMD exploded for five second and third period goals to bury the Mavericks 12-0 and extend its hold on third-place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Three players recorded four points in the outing, led by senior defenseman Brigette Lacquette's three goals and one assist.  Sophomore center Lara Stalder netted two goals and dished two assists, while sophomore center Katerina Mrázová had four helpers in the skate.  14 players in all notched a point, while six players had two or more points.

UMD's Michela Cava netted the first goal of the game 9:53 into the opening period, and Lacquette scored the first of her three power play goals with 1:40 remaining in the stanza to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

From there, UMD would roll.  Meghan Huertas scored 4:13 into the second period (her first of two) and Zoe Hickel extended her scoring streak to six games with a score at 7:04.  Lacquette and Ashleigh Brykaliuk added power play goals just over seven minutes apart, and rookie Michelle Lowenhielm rounded out the period with a goal that came with just 37 seconds left in the stanza.

Huertas, Brienna Gillanders and Lacquette added goals in the third period, while Stalder netted two.  With three power play goals in the contest, Lacquette joins former UMD greats Jenny Potter and Caroline Ouellette as the only players in Bulldog history ever to have scored three power play goals in a game.

Junior goaltender Kayla Black saved all six shots she faced and picked up her 15th win on the season, while Karissa Grapp made three stops in 11:42 of work.  UMD shelled MSU with 56 shots while holding the Mavericks to just nine shots on goal.  The Bulldogs were brilliant on their power play, with UMD cashing in on five of its 10 attempts with the extra skater.

The Bulldogs and Mavericks will go at it again tomorrow night in Mankato, with their game slated to get underway at 3:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  UMD senior winger Jenna McParland did not play in Friday's win … Friday night was the first time Finnish Olympic goaltender Evelina Suonpää was officially in the line-up for the Bulldogs.
