NEAR-PERFECT OFFENSIVE ASSAULT LEADS NO. 1 UMD OVER MINOT STATE

The University of Minnesota Duluth's outside hitters combined for 34 kills on 41 swings without an error between them as junior Taylor Wissbroecker and senior Mariah Scharf led a Bulldog offensive assault in a three-match sweep over Minot State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.

Wissbroecker led the UMD (13-2, 6-1 NSIC) offense for the second-straight night with 20 kills and a .714 attack percentage on 28 swings, completing a double-double with 10 digs while adding one service ace as well. Scharf added 14 kills without an error on 23 swings while also knocking down three blocks and adding three service aces of her own, accounting for 18.5 total points, just shy of Wissbroecker's 21.0.

The match wasn't all Bulldog offense though as Minot State (3-11, 0-7 NSIC) actually jumped out on UMD early in the game one, scoring six straight points to take a 9-4 and eventual 11-5 lead. UMD shifted the momentum on kills from Wissbroecker and junior middle blocker Sydnie Mauch (who had 11 on the day), turned a 15-10 lead to 15-13. The Bulldogs would roll from there, eventually tearing off seven consecutive points and 11 of the final 12 to secure a 25-18 game one win. The momentum stayed firmly in UMD's corner in game two as the team did not make an error, rolling off six- and seven-point runs to collect a 25-8 vctory.

Game three saw the Bulldogs jump out early, but a four-point run but the Beavers put them up 8-6 and eventually 10-9 before UMD once again rallied, scoring 10-of-12 and 15-of-18 points to put the win away. As a team, the Bulldogs made just 10 attack errors, with senior setter Ashley Hinsch uncharacteristically accounting for four, meaning her regular attackers amounted just six. Hinsch, to her credit, would knock down a block, collect five digs, and lift 49 assists. First-year libero Erin Schindler grabbed 17 digs for UMD while Minot's freshman defensive specialist Logan Desorcy had seven. The Beavers were led offensively by junior middle hitter Shaunessy Dauwalder with seven kills while first-year setter Kelsey Dewulf had 20 assists.
