NO. 6 BULLDOGS GRIND OUT 2-1 WIN OVER NO. 7 UMASS-LOWELL FRIDAY NIGHT

Goals against the University of Massachusetts-Lowell this season have been at premium this season and that was the case Friday at AMSOIL Arena. The University of Minnesota Duluth got only two pucks past River Hawk goaltender Kevin Boyle all night, but that was enough for a 2-1 victory as his counterpart Kasimir Kaskisuo took care of business at the other end of the rink.

20434?Senior defenseman Andy Welinski scored once and added an assist for the Bulldogs, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2), improved to 3-1-2 on the year, and knocked UMass-Lowell from the ranks of the unbeatens (3-1-2). The River Hawks entered the night having allowed five goals in its five previous outings.

Welinski put UMD up 1-0 on a shot from the right point 6:28 into the second period -- his second goal the season -- before River Hawks right winger Ryan Dmowski pocketed the equalizer six minutes later. With 1:59 to go in that same period, Dominic Toninato, banged home a rebound after Alex Iafallo's blast from the left face off circle rang off pipe. That power play goal broke an 0-for-19 man advantage skid for UMD.

Kaskisuo, who has now made 18 consecutive starts dating back to early last February, finished with 26 saves, including 11 stops in each of the final two periods, while Boyle turned aside 38 shots on a night that a former Bulldog puckstopper, Glenn "Chico" Resch, had his No. 1 jersey retired. Resch starred with the Bulldogs from 1968-71 before launching a 14-year National Hockey League career that included three All-Star Game appearances and a Stanley Cup championship with the New York Islanders in 1979-80.

"This is a huge non-conference weekend for us," said Toninato. "After the two ties last weekend (at Notre Dame), we needed to get some momentum going."

The two teams will meet again Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
