The University of Minnesota Duluth struck first but ended its home season in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on a low note as the University of Minnesota-Crookston knocked off the Bulldogs 2-1 in double overtime at Malosky Stadium on Friday night.
UMD (4-11-2, 3-9-2 NSIC) got another strong performance out of freshmen goalkeeper
Sisley Ng, who stopped 9 shots on the night despite drawing the tough-luck loss in the 114th minute. On the other side, the Bulldogs peppered Lexie Gauger for Minnesota-Crookston (7-9-1, 7-7-0 NSIC), totalling 14 shots on the night including 12 on target. Honored at halftime as she finished her four-year career with the Bulldogs, redshirt junior midfielder
Katie Peterson struck for the second goal of her season just seconds before the 14-minute mark of the opening half, redirecting a corner kick by junior midfielder
Marissa Ganske to give the Bulldogs an early advantage that they took to the halftime break. All four seniors started for UMD - Peterson, midfielders
Kate McMahon and
Leah Nesheim, and defender
Jackie Sorenson.
Unfortunately, the celebration would end for UMD at the half as Minnesota Crookston drew even with UMD with an unassisted tally by Lorna McCall just 2:20 into the second half. The Bulldogs would have their looks in the second half, getting a late shot on net from sophomore midfielder
Nicole Becker. UMD dominated the first overtime session, out-shooting the Golden Eagles 5-1 but the match ended just before the five-minute mark of the second overtime when senior forward Courtney Armborst netted her seventh goal of the season, getting an assist from her goalkeeper Auger.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will travel to Bemidji State University on Sunday to close out the NSIC regular season. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Bemidji.
