The University of Minnesota Duluth let the second quarter get away from it as Lake Superior State University knocked off the Bulldogs 57-46 in a tightly-wound defensive battle on day two of the Lake State Classic hosted by the Lakers on Sunday afternoon.
UMD (0-3) had a trio of players hit double figures, led by first-year guard
Sammy Kozlowski, who dropped a pair of threes and also, along with junior center
Allyson Harris, led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds on the day. Freshman forward
Emma Boehm dropped ten points for the second-straight game.
The first quarter opened all UMD as the team jumped out to an 8-2 lead on a
Kenzie Kane (Jr./Forward) jump shot just past the six-minute mark, but a pair of threes by the home-Lakers knotted the game at 10 as the quarter came to a close. Lake Superior State scored 11 of the first 13 points in the second quarter, opening a 23-12 lead on the Bulldogs with 4:14 remaining in the half. A lay-up by Tamara Novic, who led the Lakers with 11 points off the bench, would give LSSU a halftime lead of 12.
UMD out-scored Lake Superior State 19-17 in the third quarter and 27-26 in the second half but couldn't make up the deficit created in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were just 3-of-12 in the second, and it cost them as they shot just 32.7 percent for the game. Compounding that, UMD drew just 14 fouls in the game and finished 6-of-8 from three-point range. LSSU was 10-of-19 in the second quarter and shot 44.9 percent of the game, getting 22 points off its bench compared to just six from the UMD reserves.
UP NEXTThe match-up draws to a close the non-conference schedule for the Bulldogs, who will return to the friendly confines of Romano Gym for the first time in the regular season on Saturday afternoon. UMD hosts St. Cloud State University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. in Duluth.
