BULLLDOGS SUFFER RARE SWEEP FOLLOWING SECOND STRAIGHT 4-2 LOSS TO MAVERICKS

The University of Nebraska Omaha was able to do something Saturday night that no other club had done in almost 21 months -- complete a regular season series sweep of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Mavericks accomplished that task by busting open a 1-1 tie with three goals in a span of just over four minutes en route to its second 4-2 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory in as many nights over the Bulldogs in Omaha.

No. 6 UMD (3-4-3 overall and 0-2-0-0/0  NCHC), which hadn't been swept during the regular season since Feb. 21-22, 2014 (to the University of North Dakota in Duluth), outshot the No. 8 Mavericks 37-21 on the night but once again couldn't solve Omaha goaltender Evan Weninger. Weninger, who made 45 saves in Friday's opener, turned aside the first 21 shots he faced until Dominic Toninato broke the ice at 13:52 of the second period with his fourth goal of 2015-16 (tying him with senior left winger Austin Farley for the team lead).  After intercepting a Maverick clearing attempt near the left point, Toninato whirled and swatted a shot that got through traffic and past Weninger, tying the game at 1-1.  It stayed deadlocked until 13:29 had elapsed in the third when Jake Guentzel and Frederik Olofsson scored 42 seconds apart. With 2:13 to go and sophomore Kasimir Kaskisuo pulled for an extra attacker while UMD was on the power play, Guentzel added some insurance -- the Mavericks' second shorthander of the evening -- before junior defenseman Willie Raskob rounded out the scoring using a sharp angle wrister from the extended goal line to collect his first goal of the year in the game's waning seconds.

The Bulldogs will return to AMSOIL Arena this Friday and Saturday to host the University of Denver.
