UMD FALLS ON WRONG END OF SLOPPY OUTING AGAINST WINONA STATE

  ?
A combined 38 turnovers bogged down play between the University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University on Saturday afternoon, but an 0-for-19 shooting mark from three-point range put UMD on the wrong end of a sloppy outing by both teams, falling 67-47 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at Romano Gymnasium.

UMD (11-11, 9-9 NSIC) falls back to even on the season as it fights for playoff positioning in the final weeks of the season, while Winona State (17-5, 13-5 NSIC) secures its footing in the NSIC South Division.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Junior forward Taylor Meyer just missed a double-double with 10 points and  a game-high eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, with senior guard Danielle Flood leading the way on the scoreboard with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Nine different players had at least a basket for UMD.
• Sophomore center Kayla Timmerman led all scorers with 20 points off the bench for WSU, shooting 9-of-14 while hauling in four rebounds. Freshman forward Hannah McGlone had six boards to lead the Warriors.

With neither team shooting particularly well out of the blocks, Winona State led 5-4 after five minutes of play and the first media timeout. The Warriors quickly regained their composure and opened up a 19-4 lead thanks to a 14-0 run ove the next five minutes. Junior guard Taylor Dillinger finally broke the skid with 9:30 to play in the half, and senior guard Jessica Newman trimmed it to 11 off a Winona State turnover, but the Warriors succesfully held the Bulldogs at bay through the rest of the game.

UMD scored 43 points over the final 29:30, but Winona State continued its hot shooting and scored 48 to take home a 20-point victory. After shooting just 20 percent 97-of-35) in the first half, the Bulldogs were 13-of-31 after the break to finish at 30.3 percent for the game. Winona State shot 50.0 percent in the second half and almost for the game, finishing 48-of-57 (49.1 percent). UMD was 0-of-10 from three-point range in the first half and couldn't get any to fall in nine attempts after the break. Taking out three-point attempts, UMD shot 42.6 percent for the game. Each team had 19 turnovers in the game.
