University of Minnesota Duluth freshman goalkeeper
Sisley Ng made six saves and got another from her defense as the Bulldogs defense played tightly against No. 25 Winona State University, but the Warriors eked out a 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory at Malosky Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
For UMD (2-5-1, 1-3-1 NSIC), the offensive woes continued in the first half as the team was out-shot 12-1 including 4-0 in on-target attempts. Winona State (6-2-0, 3-2-0 NSIC) broke up its own two-game losing streak while taking five corner kicks in the opening half. The Warriors made good on one early as senior midfielder Katie Baker redirected a rebounded shot by freshman forward Abby Bohanski into the back of the net for her second score of the season. Bohanski would get her own chance late in the game, as Ng punched out a crossing ball that unfortunately hopped right to the first-year striker, who nailed the top of the net for her sixth score of the year.
The Bulldogs offense looked much stronger after the break -- where the players paid tribute on Parents Day, with the team out-shooting Winona State 8-7 and maintaining possession in the Warriors' end for much of the half. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Oleson would stop three balls to maintain her shutout while the defense ahead of her really limited the good looks for UMD. Senior midfielder
Leah Nesheim, sophomore mid
Marissa Ganske, and first-year forward
Natalie St. Martin each had a pair of shots on the day to lead the Bulldogs. With today's defeat, UMD slips to 11-15-3 all-time against the Warriors.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs' extended homestand concludes after Sunday with the team traveling next weekend to the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University in a two-match NSIC road trip before returning home the following week for homecoming. UMD and USF will kick off the weekend early as the teams match up at 11:00 a.m. in Sioux Falls next Saturday.
