Kalle Kossila scored once -- the game winner -- and assisted on another goal while goaltender Charlie Lindgren stopped 28 of 29 shots in leading St. Cloud State University to a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Friday night at AMSOIL Arena. The Bulldogs, who were making their 2016 regular season home debut, were stymied on all seven of its power play opportunities while falling to 8-8-4 overall and 5-6-2-1 in the NCHC.
No. 17 UMD trailed 1-0 midway through the first period when senior center
Cal Decowski got the equalizer with the wrister from between the circles for his first goal of the season. With 8:33 gone in the second period, Bulldog junior left winger
Kyle Osterberg was whistled for a tripping penalty and it took the No.5 Huskies (18-5-0; 10-3-0-0) just five seconds to capitalize as Kossila, stationed in the high slot, took a feed from Joey Benik and beat Bulldog goaltender
Kasimir Kaskisuo.  Blake Winieck gave the Huskies some insurance with his odd angle goal at 10:21 of the third  -- one of just four shots the Huskies put on target that period.
Kaskisuo, who came into the night sporting the NCHC's second-best goals against average (1.85), made 23 saves and spent a little under three minutes of the third period on the bench in favor of the extra attacker.
"St. Cloud State is a good puck-moving and transition team," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "Our execution tonight was not very good and I think that carried right over into the power play."
The two intrastate rivals will meet again Saturday night in Duluth.
