The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team threw almost everything it had against Brittni Mowat, but the Bemidji State Unviersity goaltender found away to stop it.

Mowat and the No. 7 Beavers shutout the Bulldogs 2-0 at AMSOIL Arena Saturday afternoon to earn the Western Collegiate Hockey Assocation sweep over UMD.  The win puts BSU at 17-7-2 overall and 12-7-1 in third the league, while UMD falls to 9-16-1 and 6-13-1 in the WCHA in sixth place.

The Bulldogs outshot BSU 9-6 in the opening period, but the Beavers cashed in a power play by Kaitlyn Tougas 9:38 into the second period -- their third of the series -- to take a 1-0 lead.  

BSU struck again 1:46 into the third period, and from there, it was Mowat who turned away 10 third period and 27 Bulldog shots on goal to secure the win.  Junior forwar Demi Crossman had a team-high six shots on net for UMD, who was 0-of-3 on its power play.

Freshman goaltender Maddie Rooney made 26 saves for the Bulldogs, who currently own the nation's toughest strength of schedule for a third-consecutive week after playing six-straight games against opponents ranked in the top-eight in the nation.

"When you open up the second half of the season with Wisconsin at Wisconsin, and they are undefeated there, and you come back with North Dakota and then Bemidji, it's a tough go," said head coach Maura Crowell.  "Obviously we wanted to steal a couple of points here and there, but we now enter a stretch of the season where we feel like we should be picking up points.  We need to make sure we take care of business from here."  

UMD will wrap up its season-long three week home stand next weekend when it hosts Ohio State University at AMSOIL.  The series will get undeway at 7:07 p.m. Friday night and will feature former Bulldog All-American Jenny Potter, who is in her first season behind the bench of the Buckeyes.
