The University of Minnesota Duluth and Miami University are the only two clubs to win a 3-on-3 overtime in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play this season and now the RedHawks are the only ones to do it twice.
Louie Belpedia saw to that when he banged home a goal with 49 seconds to go after Miami and the Bulldogs were unable to break a 1-1 deadlock in the NCAA-mandated five minute overtime. That gave the RedHawks the extra point in the NCHC series opener, which marked the opening of the season half of the 2015-16 season for No. 19 UMD (7-7-4 overall; 4-5-2-1 NCHC).
Chris Joyaux struck 2:16 into the second period to give Miami (6-10-2; 2-7-2-2) a lead it would cling to until 5:22 remained in regulation. That's when
Tony Cameranesi's wicked wrister from the right circle sailed past RedHawk goaltender Jay Williams and just under the crossbar. It was the senior center's sixth goal of the season and UMD's first score in 177:02. UMD outshot Miami 15-8 in the third period and 37-25 on the night, just a tad under its 37.65 shot per game average which ranked second in the country coming into the weekend. Cameranesi was one of five Bulldogs to put a team-high four shots on target in the draw.
Sophomore goaltender
Kasimir Kaskisuo, who has allowd just one goal in his last 197:13 of road activity, finished his 24 saves in his 30th consecutive start while Williams had 29 stops.
The two teams, which both went 0-for-3 on the powr play, will meet again at 6:05 p.m. (CT) at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford.
