NOTRE DAME PREVAILS 3-1 AND KNOCKS BULLDOGS FROM THE UNBEATEN RANKS

The University of Notre Dame scored twice within 55 seconds early in the third period and held on for a 3-1 non-conference victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday night. The loss was the first of the season for the No. 4 Bulldogs, who fell to 3-1-2. No. 5 Notre Dame is 3-1-0.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore center Adam Johnson, who had two goals in UMD's 4-3 triumph on Friday, broke the ice 1:53 into the second period when his hard wrister from the left face off circle that beat lefthanded Notre Dame goaltender Cal Petersen low to the stick side. That goal extended Johnson's point streak to a career-high six games. Just over 13 minutes later while on the power play,  Andre Oglevie got Notre Dame on the board, but that's all the scoring the Irish could generate that period despite outshooting the hosts 17-7. Jordan Gross (at 5:01) and Dylan Malmquist (at 5:56) tacked on goal in the third period with both coming on shots from the right and left point, respectively, that snuck through traffic.

Freshman Hunter Shepard, the third UMD goaltender to make his collegiate debut this season, made 35 saves on 38 shots -- the most given up by the Bulldogs thus far -- while his counterpart, Cal Petersen, finished with 27 stops and held the UMD scoreless in all four of its power play chances.

"We just didn't win the battles in the third period," said UMD senior center and team captain Dominic Toninato. "We didn't bury our opportunities and they capitalized on theirs."

UMD, which also had its seven-game home winning streak snapped by the Irish, will remain at AMSOIL Arena next Saturday night for an exhibition bout against the U.S. National Under-18 Team.
