With three different goal scorers Saturday and seven different goal scorers on the weekend, it's safe to say the No. 3. University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team has plenty of offense to go around.
The Bulldogs didn't rely on any particular player in their series against Ohio State University, and the result was a series sweep after a 3-2 win over the Buckeyes in at OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. Seven of UMD's nine goals were scored by different players, and 13 players in all recorded points against the Buckeyes in the series.
After the Buckeyes survived a 18-5 on goal shelling by UMD in the first period, the Bulldogs got on the board at 8:32 of the second period on Maria Lindh's first goal of the season. With 4:59 remaining, Ashleigh Brykaliuk doubled that lead to 2-0. Â
Despite a shots on goal advantage of 39-10 through the first two periods, OSU made it a 2-1 game at 6:35 of the third period on a Maddy Field power play goal. Senior blueliner Sidney Morin gave UMD back its two-goal lead with 4:35 remaining in the game, but the Buckeyes again made it interesting when they closed within a single goal at 1:09 left in the contest after netting a goal with an extra attacker.
OSU would get no closer, and after outshooting the Buckeyes 47-27 on the ice, UMD pocketed its sixth win of the season by outscoring OSU 3-2 to improve to 6-2-2 overall and 5-2-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Bulldogs are unbeaten in their last four outings, having now gone 3-0-1 over that span.
Sophomore goaltender Maddie Rooney made 25 saves for UMD, while OSU netminder Kassidy Sauve turned in 44 saves for the Buckeyes, who fall to 3-6-1 overall and 1-6-1 in league play.
UMD will take next weekend off from outside competition before heading to Grand Forks, N.D. on Nov. 12-13.
BULLDOG NOTES: Senior Sidney Morin's goal was her 12th career goal, giving her sole possession of tenth all-time among UMD's defensemen scorers … Despite having scored more than other team in the NCAA (36), the Bulldogs don't have any players higher than No. 14 in points per game, with both Lara Stalder and Katherine McGovern sitting with a 1.40 ppg average.
