NO. 1 UMD DOWNS MARY IN THREE SETS TO KEEP PERFECT RECORD INTACT

The University of Minnesota Duluth was ranked as the nation's No. 1 NCAA Division II team earlier this week, and it lived up to that ranking Friday night in Bismarck, N.D. After a pair of five-set victories last weekend, UMD (16-0, 8-0 NSIC) would need just three to knock off the University of Mary (7-10, 2-6 NSIC) and remain unbeaten.

The Bulldogs recorded their most efficient offensive match of the season - hitting .430 on the night while holding U-Mary to just .198. UMD was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Kelly, who hit .462 en route to 16 kills. Also turning in stellar performances were middle blockers Sydnie Mauch and Allison Olley, hitting .786 and .600 on the match and grabbing 11 kills a piece. Freshman setter Emily Torve tallied 43 assists and added three kills on four tries. Defensively, sophomore libero Erin Schindler led the way with 15 digs.

This is the 11th time of the season that the Bulldogs have swept an opponent. UMD has yet to drop a match to U-Mary in program history - improving to 13-0.

The Mauraders gave the Bulldogs all they could handle in the opening set, as UMD was able to squeak by 25-23. After being tied at 12-12, the Bulldogs picked up the pace and extended their lead to 20-15. UMD hit .428 on the set, thanks large in part to seven kills by Kelly.

The second set bounced back and forth as well, but UMD was able to prevail by a score of 25-19. The Bulldogs fell down early 9-5, but stuck close to U-Mary and tied up the score at 17 a piece. UMD didn't look back, rallying off eight of the next ten to take the set. The Bulldogs hit a match low, but still impressive .351 on the set.

UMD dominate the third and final set after jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. U-Mary wouldn't get any closer than four points the remainder of the set, eventually falling 25-17 to cap off the sweep. The Bulldogs could not have looke much better statistically - recording an attack percentage of .542 as opposed to U-Mary's .107.

The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow (Oct. 8) on the road against Minot State University.
