The University of Minnesota Duluth Women's Basketball team opened up its 2016-17 campaign by falling victim to Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon in Romano Gymnasium.
The Huskies (1-0) used the three-ball by shooting 9-24 from beyond the arc to beat the Bulldogs (0-1). UMD shot just 2-12 from three but scored 24 points from inside the paint. Four Huskies scored in the double-digits to lift them over the Bulldogs 60-47.

Taylor Meyer back into the lineup after having missed the entirety of last season after having led the team in points two seasons ago and averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game. Meyer scored a team-high 12 points on 6-12 shooting. Freshman forward
Josie Buckley scored 11 points in her collegiate debut by shooting 5-10. Buckley shot one of the two three-pointers for UMD.
UMD started the game by shooting just 2-16 in the first nine minutes, before making its last two baskets in final 41 seconds. The Bulldogs held the Huskies to just 11-34 shooting in the first half but wasn't able to take advantage, going 9-35 from the floor and 0-7 from beyond the arc.
After scoring a mere 18 points in the first half, UMD opened up the second half by aggressively attacking the board. Meyer accounted for six of 12 points scored by the Bulldogs in the third quarter. UMD shot 12-26 in the second half, racking up 29 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. The Huskies out-blocked the Bulldogs 9-0 and scored 15 points off of turnovers. Senior guard Brenna Heise and sophomore forward Elizabeth Kelliher collected three blocks apiece for Michigan Tech.
UMD will head to Marquette, Mich. to play Northern Michigan Tuesday (Nov. 22) in the first of three road games. Tip-off will be at 5p.m (CT).
