The No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team ran its unbeaten streak to six-games strong Sunday after the Bulldogs tied the No. 9 University of North Dakota 2-2 in Grand Fork, N.D.
Despite dropping the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's mandated shootout, UMD proved for a six-straight game that its becoming an ever difficult team to solve. The tie moves the Bulldogs to 7-2-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the WCHA, where the Bulldogs currently reside in third place.
For a fourth time in their last 11 skates, the Bulldogs and Fighting Hawks played into overtime, despite UMD pushing out to a 2-0 early in the second period. Katherine McGovern's seventh goal of the season polished off a 2-on-1 with rookie Sydney Brodt 13:47 into the first period.
UMD broke its power play drought and stretched the lead to 2-0 just 3:47 into the second period on a put-back by senior defenseman Sidney Morin. North Dakota answered with a power play goal of its own at the 8:15 mark and after 40 minutes of play, UMD held a slim 2-1 advantage over the Fighting Hawks.
That goal advantage looked like it was going to hold for the Bulldogs, who also managed to outshoot UND 11-8 in the third period. But the Fighting Hawks equalized with 29 seconds remaining in regulation on a score by Charly Dahquist.
North Dakota outshot UMD 32-22 in the game, but again sophomore goaltender Maddie Rooney came up big between the pipes with 30 saves. Each squad netted one power play goal, with UMD going 1-of-3 and North Dakota 1-of-4.
The Bulldogs will return home to AMSOIL Arena next weekend to face the No. 1 University of Wisconsin. Friday night's game will is slated for 7:07 p.m.
