In its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference appearance since 2014, the University of Minnesota Duluth fell short of advancing after being knocked out in the first round by Augustana (S.D).
The Bulldogs wrapped up their 2016 season with a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Vikings. Augustana started 1-3-1 in its first five games but finished it's regular season 11-4-3 which included a 7-1 record at home.Â
The Bulldogs out-shot the Vikings 13-9 overall and allowed just two shots on net the entire game, but it only took one goal to decide the final score. Junior defender Hannah Keirstead got behind the Bulldog defense and used to head to collect the only goal of the game midway through the first half. The goal came off a cross from junior midfielder Ellie Knowles. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sisley Ng faced a season-low two shots on goal and managed to save one of them.Â
Junior defender
Skye Finley was responsible for four of the six shots on goal for UMD. Eight different Bulldogs were able to collect a shot. Finley finished tied atop the Bulldog shot chart on the season with sophomore midfielder
Natalie St. Martin with 38. Finley led all Bulldogs in goals (5), assists(4), and points (14) over the course of the season. UMD finished it's 2016 campaign with five draws - a program record - and went 0-0-5 in overtime or double overtime games.Â
For the second straight year, 11 different Bulldogs garnered at least one point. UMD finished with an overall record of 8-6-5 and went 6-4-5 in NSIC games, an obvious improvement from 2015 when it went 4-12-2 overall and 3-10-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs were 5-2 in games decided one goal, whereas they were 2-9 in one-goal games last season.Â
