The University of Minnesota Duluth suffered its third loss by six points or less in as many games, falling to Northern Michigan University 71-65.
UMD was much more efficient from the three-point line than NMU, shooting 44.0% as opposed to 23.8%, but the Wildcats took advantage under the basket to secure the victory. Northern Michigan grabbed 51 rebounds to the Bulldogs' 37, outscoring UMD 28-14 in the paint.
Freshman guard
Logan Rohrscheib led the Bulldog offense by netting a career-best 19 points, connecting on five of eight from beyond the arc. Junior guard
Kyle Schalow added 13 points of his own and picked up five rebounds. Northern Michigan sported a balanced attack, with four players scoring 10 or more points.
After an early UMD lead in the opening minutes, the Wildcats grabbed the lead with 17:37 remaining and would remain ahead for the rest of the first half. Northern Michigan extended its lead to 11 points with just over three minutes to go, but a pair of three-pointers from Schalow and sophomore guard
Cody Tomlinson quickly cut the deficit to five. Schalow scored 11 of his 13 points in the opening half to take UMD to the locker room facing a 40-34 NMU advantage.
The Bulldogs stormed back midway through the second half, as Rohrscheib drilled a three-pointer off an assist from freshman forward
Brandon Myer, tying the score at 50. With 1:18 remaining and Northern Michigan holding onto a three point lead, sophomore forward
Sean Burns converted on a layup to bring the 'Dogs within one. Shortly after, Myer made good on a pair from the charity stripe to give UMD a one point edge, 65-64, with 48 seconds to go. The Bulldogs were unable to score in the remainder of the half, resulting in seven straight points for the home team and a 71-65 victory.
