Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

NO. 3 BULLDOGS SUFFER 2-1 SETBACK TO MINNESOTA STATE

The No. 3 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team had its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. by Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Mavericks used two third period power play goals to upset the Bulldogs, who entered the game with a 16-game winning streak against MSU.

UMD scored the contest's opening goal with a tally late in the first period on senior forward Lara Stalder's ninth goal of the season.  Stalder's goal — with assists credited to Ashleigh Brykaliuk and Catherine Daaoust — gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with 1:22 remaining in the stanza.

Similar to Friday night, UMD built up a significant 24-8 shots on goal advantage after the first 40 minutes, but unlike the previous night, where the Bulldogs never surrendered a penalty, the Mavericks were able to highlight their power play.  Megan Hinze struck for MSU at 3:47 of the third period to even the game at 1-1, and it was Hinze again at 14:48 that gave the Mavericks their 2-1 lead.  UMD had one final power play granted with 1:56 remaining, but simply could not solve Brianna Quade, who made 39 saves Saturday for a total of 72 on the weekend.

The Bulldogs were 0-of-5 with the extra skater, compared to the 2-of-4 performance the Mavericks turned in despite being outshot by UMD 40-19. Goaltender Maddie Rooney had 17 saves against MSU, who improves to 5-13-2 overall and 3-12-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The loss is just the fourth in 20 games for the Bulldogs, who now stand at 13-4-3 and 10-4-2 in the WCHA.  It is the first setback for UMD against a team that was not ranked.

UMD will be idle from outside competition until Jan. 7, 2017, when it hosts the Minnesota Whitecaps in an exhibition game at AMSOIL Arena.  Game-time is set for 3:00 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  With an assist Saturday, Ashleigh Brykaliuk has now tied her career-long scoring streak of 11 games … Brykaliuk has compiled seven goals and seven assists for 14 points over that span … the senior forward hit the 11-game mark last season between Nov. 27, 2015 through Jan. 22, 2016, and amassed five goals and 14 assists for 19 points over that time.
