The University of Minnesota Duluth, backed by 15 points from freshman forward
Brandon Myer, was unable to hold off the surging St. Cloud State University, eventually falling by a 63-58 final.
"There are a lot of positives that went into the game, I thought for the majority of the game we controlled the tempo and controlled the lead," head coach
Matt Bowen said. "Unfortunately with three minutes to go, there were some key possessions where we came up empty and they capitalized, and that's something that happens with young teams."
The Bulldogs connected on 21 of 54 from the field for a 38.9 percentage, while St. Cloud State shot just 30 percent from the floor. Both teams shot nearly identical from the three-point line, UMD knocked down seven of 23 as compared to SCSU's eight of 25. It was the Huskies' Scottie Stone who ultimately carried St. Cloud to a victory, scoring 30 points, including six shots from three-point range.
UMD wasted little time grabbing an early advantage, leading 16-9 early in the contest. St. Cloud State answered back with eight straight points to pull ahead by one with 7:53 remaining in the first half, capped off by a three-pointer by Stone. With the score knotted at 27 a piece, sophomore forward
Ryan Kaczynski converted on a layup as the buzzer sounded to give the Bulldogs a 29-27 lead into halftime.
UMD held onto the lead for much of the second half, including a 53-48 mark with just four minutes to play. Once again, Stone connected on a couple shots from beyond the arc to vault the Huskies to a 54-53 lead -- not allowing the Bulldogs back on top the remainder of the game. Junior guard
Kyle Schalow hit a three with 10 seconds to play to bring UMD within three, but it would be too late, as SCSU knocked down free throws to grab a 63-58 victory.
The Bulldogs will return to Romano Gymnasium on Monday to face the University of Wisconsin Parkside at 3 p.m.
