The University of Minnesota Duluth Women's Basketball team held a high-octane St. Cloud State University offense in check on its way to a 61-55 victory at Romano Gymnasium.
After having allowed a season-high 84 points in their first meeting, the Bulldogs (5-4; 4-2 NSIC) were able to hold the Huskies (6-4; 4-2 NSIC) to their second-lowest scoring performance of the season.
In a dismal 3-15 shooting display by St. Cloud for a season-low seven points in the first quarter, UMD quickly found itself in a similar predicament. Having taken a 15-7 lead into the second, the Bulldogs shot just 3-12 for seven points as the Huskies closed the gap to 22-21 going into the half.
Sophomore guard
Sammy Kozlowski filled up her stat sheet as she helped lead the way for UMD. Kozlowski finished with 14 points, grabbed a game-high nine boards, tallied six assists and added four steals. Senior forward
Taylor Meyer led all Bulldogs with 17 points on 7-15 shooting. Meyer accounted for nine of the 22 first half points scored by UMD. The Bulldogs outscored the Huskies in the paint 26-14 and held their bench to just five points. Junior guard Amanda Christianson and Besty MacDonald each scored 18 points, combining for 36 of St. Clouds 55 points. MacDonald ranks first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with 19.5 points per game. Fellow Huskie, senior guard Chelsea Nooker, ranks fourth with 16.4 PPG. The Bulldogs held Nooker to just 3-12 shooting for nine points.Â
UMD didn't win its fifth game of the season until the 16th game last year, against Minot State University.
The Bulldogs will take a few weeks off before its next competition. UMD will face the University of Mary on Friday (Dec. 30) at 6 p.m. and Minot State on Saturday (Dec. 31) for a New Years Eve bout.Â
