Down by two points as the last few seconds ticked away in overtime, the University of Minnesota Duluth rattled out a pair of shots, dropping its first Northern Sun Collegiate Conference game of 2016 to Bemidji State University 75-73.
UMD and BSU had nearly identical shooting statistics -- the Bulldogs netted 38.7% from the field to Bemidji's 38.2%, while the Beavers shot 37.5% from three to UMD's 34.5%. The free throw line proved to be a weak point for the Bulldogs, as they made just 5-9 while BSU capitalized on 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard
Trevor Entwisle scored a team-leading 19 points, thanks large in part to five three-pointers. Freshman forward
Brandon Myer notched 12 points and 12 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double, but had to depart from the game with minutes to go in overtime due to a leg injury. For the Beavers, it was freshman guard Jai'Vionne Green who scored 20 points and added seven boards.
Bemidji State quickly gained a 10-4 lead just four minutes into the game, but UMD scored 11 of the next 14 points to grab a two point advantage. The Beavers jumped back on top shortly after and scored six unanswered points towards the end of the half, taking a 32-23 lead to halftime.
Just as it appeared BSU was about to run away with the game, holding a 53-36 lead with just over 10 minutes to play, the Bulldogs began to click offensively and scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to nine. Entwisle, having already made two three-pointers in the previous two minutes, banked in another long-range shot to bring the score to 64-63 with just over one minute remaining. The sophomore guard wasn't done with his hot shooting, as he connected on yet another three to give UMD a 68-66 lead with 30 seconds to play. Bemidji State's Green quickly responded by storming down the court and knocking in a layup to tie the game and set up overtime.
UMD would begin the extra period by scoring four straight points in the opening 1:07, but were only able to tack on one more point the remainder of the way. With the score knotted at 73-73, neither team was able to score for the next two and a half minutes. The Beavers finally pulled through with just nine seconds left, as freshman forward Logan Bader put Bemidji State on top for good by capitalizing on an offensive rebound put-back.Â
The Bulldogs will return to Romano Gymnasium tomorrow night for an NSIC matchup against the University of Minnesota Crookton. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
