After posting a season-high field goal percentage in Friday night's victory, the University of Minnesota Duluth was unable to keep its offensive efficiency in a 67-56 defeat to Minot State University. The Bulldogs shot 19 of 58 from the field (32.8 percent) -- a new season-low for field goal percentage.
Despite the shooting struggles, UMD paced with the Beavers throughout the game, never trailing by more than 11 points. The Bulldogs held the lead for 1:37, with their last lead coming at the 13:25 mark of the first half. With UMD holding an 11-10 lead, Minot State rattled off seven straight points and 16 of the next 21 points to grab a double-digit lead. The Bulldogs were unable to break within seven the remainder of the half, concluding with a score of 37-28.
UMD clawed back early in the second half, as freshman forward
Trenton Krueger scored five straight points in the opening two minutes. The Bulldogs inched within four points on multiple occasions, including with just over seven minutes remaining, but were ultimately unable to get any closer. MSU closed the contest with six unanswered points in the final minute, capping a 67-56 victory.
Freshmen
Luke Harris and
Brandon Myer paved the way offensively, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively. Junior guard
Kyle Schalow notched seven points while adding six rebounds and a pair of assists. For Minot State, junior forward Tyler Rudolph scored 26 points and picked up 16 rebounds, leading all players in both categories. As a team, UMD struggled from the three point line, connecting on just 5-26 (19.2 percent) from long range.
The Bulldogs will return to Romano Gymnasium for a non-conference test against the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
