Andy Welinski, who figured in on half of the University of Minnesota Duluth's goals in two-game non-conference series at Northern Michigan University last weekend, was chosen the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Defenseman of the Week.
Welinski, a 2014-15 All-NCHC second team pick, scored once (which put his club up 3-2) and assisted on another goal in a 4-3 setback to the Wildcats Friday then helped set up UMD's final goal of the evening in the rematch as the Bulldogs prevailed 3-1. Welinski finished the weekend a +1 and put seven shots on goal, including five on Friday. He also anchored a UMD penalty killing unit that held Northern Michigan to one score in 10 power play opportunities.
This marks the second time this season the ironman senior team captain (he's played in 139 games over the past four seasons) and Duluth native has been bestowed with an NCHC Defenseman of the Week citation, with the other coming on Dec. 7.
Welinski and the Bulldogs are back at AMSOIL Arena this Friday and Saturday night to host Colorado College in a pair of NCHC bouts.
