Unlike in the Friday's series opener, there would be controversial finish this time around for the University of North Dakota.
Brock Boeser saw to that with 5:21 to play in the third period Saturday night when the sophomore center fired in a shot from the high slot to give the host Fighting Hawks their second straight 2-1 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth. No. 4 North Dakota upended its long-time rivalrs the previous night by cashing in on penalty shot in the waning minutes of overtime.
As was the case 24 hours earlier, UMD (11-14-5; 7-10-3-1 NCHC) struck first, getting a goal which came off the skate of senior center
Cal Decowski on a
Carson Soucy rebound as Decowski was crashing the North Dakota net. That came at the 14:02 mark of the second period and it took the Fighting Hawks (24-5-3; 15-4-1-0) a little over four minutes to answer. Taking a faceoff in the right circle in the UMD zone, Boeser drew the puck back to defenseman Paul LaDue, who strode to his left and used a Bulldog defender as a screen to whistle a shot past UMD netminder
Kasimir Kaskisuo.
The Bulldogs outshot North Dakota 16-8 in the final period of play to finish with the upperhand in shots (28-27) for the 26th time in 30 games this winter. Kaskisuo, who was pulled for an extra attacker for the final 69 seconds of play, finished with 25 saves while his counterpart, Cam Johnson made 27 stops. In his four appearances against UMD this season, Johnson is 4-0-0 while turning aside 137 of the 139 shots he has faced.
UMD will remain on the road next Friday and Saturday night (Feb. 26-27) to North Dakota's fellow NCHC co-leader St. Cloud State University before returning to AMSOIL Arena the following weekend for its 2015-16 regular season finales against Miami Universtiy.
Notes: UMD has now lost three straight games, all by 2-1 scores -- the first time that has happened in the program's 72-year history ... the Bulldogs were without the services of senior righter Austyn Young, who was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to an injury ... Junior left winger Alex Iafallo skated in his 100th career game Saturday ... The Bulldogs and North Dakota have now met 230 times. That ties the Fighting Hawks with Minnesota for the most lifetime confrontations against UMD ... Carson Soucy put a game-high four shots on target.
