Box Score 2 Seeking revenge from a 1-0 defeat it suffered 22 hours earlier, the University of Minnesota Duluth was again unable to generate much offense and wound up falling 6-1 to those same Bemidji State University Beavers Tuesday morning at the West St. Paul Sports Dome. Jessica Yost, who tossed a two-hitter against the Bulldogs on Monday, limited UMD to four hits in the non-conference matchup.
Bemidji State struck for a run in the top half of the first inning but the Bulldogs answered in their first at-bats. Sophomore centerfielder
Hannah Schmoll reached on an infield single and stole second before being knocked in on a two-out error. Schmoll along with senior catcher
Ashley Lewis each had a two hits for the Bulldogs, who gave up four runs to the Beavers in the third inning. Junior pitcher
Sam Hartmann (1-2) surrendered all six runs in five innings of work, giving up nine hits including a three-run homer in the third. Freshman
Valerie Hohol relieved Hartmann and slammed the door shut, striking out five of the six Beavers she face (the other grounded out).
Earlier that morning, the Bulldogs routed Central Lakes Community College 11-0 in a five-inning exhibition game. Hohol and sophomore
Sadie Knudson paired up to no-hit the Raiders. Hohol started and went three innings and struck out eight and then gave way to Knudson, who fanned four the rest of the way. The outfielding trio of Schmoll, freshman
Sammi Sadler and junior
Hailey Lundquist led the Bulldogs' 12-hit attack, five of the extra-base variety. Schmoll went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. Sadler was a home run short of the cycle, adding three runs batted in and Lundquist, who also tacked on three RBIs, had a pair of extra base knocks and a walk.
UMD (2-5 overall) now has nearly two weeks to prepare for the College Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Bulldogs play 10 games in five days beginning with outings against Slippery Rock University and Holy Family University on March 6.
