The University of Minnesota Duluth parlayed a fast start and furious finish into a huge come-from-behind victory Saturday night.
The Bulldogs struck twice in the final 3:35 of play to down Colorado College 3-2 and completed a Nationall Collegiate Hockey Conference sweep of the Tigers before a standing room crowd of 7,215 at AMSOIL Arena. With its third straight victory, UMD improved to 11-11-5 overall and 7-8-3-1 in the NCHC.
It took
Dan Molenaar and the Bulldogs just 16 seconds after the opening faceoff to get on the board. The junior defenseman took a hard wrister from the point that snuck through traffic and past Tiger goaltender Jacob Nehama for his second career goal. Colorado College scored at 5:48 of the first to draw even and then went up 2-1 5:44 into the second period on Hunter Fejes' power play play goal. The Tigers (6-21-1; 4-13-1) clung to that lead until sophomore
Andy Welinski scored on a bomb from high slot at 16:25 of the third and 53 seconds later, junior
Alex Iafallo, who had a pair of goals in UMD's 5-3 win Friday, punched in the game-winner off a rebound.
For the 24th time in 27 games this season, UMD held the upper hand in shots (35-23). Bulldog goaltender
Kasimir Kaskisuo made 21 saves, including 11 stops in third period.
"Coach (Scott) Sandelin said the third period was going to be the defining moment of our year," said Molenaar, who also collected an assist in the victory. "I think we went out and had a pretty good defining moment."
UMD will close out a three-game homestand this Tuesday night (Feb. 9) with a non-conference clash against Bemidji State University in a makeup from the two clubs' 2015-16 opener, which was postponed due to a power outage at AMSOIL Arena on Oct. 9.
