BULLLDOGS GET DEFENSIVE WITH NO. 10 WARRIORS BUT FALL IN WINONA

The University of Minnesota Duluth held tough through the first half and put together a fourth-quarter comeback, but a lights-out shooting third quarter by No. 10 Winona State University helped the Warriors edge the Bulldogs 57-46 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minnesota.

UMD (6-15, 6-12 NSIC) matched tenth-ranked Winona State (23-2, 16-2 NSIC) in the early going with the teams each scoring six baskets and a pair of threes in the opening half. UMD though, grabbed five rebounds on the offensive end and couldn't make good on second chances, shooting just 30 percent in the first frame (6-of-19) while the Warriors were 6-of-15 through the first quarter. The two teams once again matched efforts in the second quarter, but Winona State made good on 4-of-4 trips to the free throw line in the first half, taking a four-point edge to the locker room.

The Warriors cashed in on a trio threes to extend their lead in the third quarter, holding UMD with just a pair of baskets in the quarter and led by 15 heading to the final frame. The Bulldogs outperformed WSU in the final frame, drawing fouls for seemingly the first time all night and hitting 6-of-9 from the free throw line to score 15 while holding the Warriors to 11. Winona State got nearly all of its scoring from the starting line-up, just seven points off the bench, but got six three-pointers from Connor Nagle, who finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kayla Timmerman had 10 points, 10 boards, and six blocks for the Warriors. Freshman guard Sammy Kozlowski was the only Bulldog to hit double figures though seven players had at least five points on the night. She had 12 to go with six boards and two steals. Junior center Allyson Harris had a team-high 10 rebounds.

UMD finished the night shooting just 24.6 percent overall and 3-of-15 from three-point range. They took just 13 trips to the charity stripe for nine points. The Bulldogs held WSU to just 35.7 percent shooting, but the Warriors hit 8 threes on the night to push them past UMD.

The Bulldogs return to Romano Gym next weekend for the final time in 2015-16. UMD will match up with Minnesota State University Moorhead on Friday night before taking on Northern State University on Saturday during the national celebration of Play 4Kay Weekend promoting breast cancer awareness in the name of former North Carolina State University head coach Kay Yow. First, the Bulldogs will match up with the Dragons on Friday night. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
