Being Senior Night and all, it was only fitting that a pair of fourth-year Bulldogs figured prominently in the University of Minnesota Duluth's 2015-16 regular season finale against Miami University.
Defenseman
Willie Corrin and left winger
Charlie Sampair, two of the eight Bulldog senior who were recognized in a pre-game ceremony Saturday, each scored once in fueling UMD to a 2-1 triumph over the RedHawks and a sweep of the two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series at AMSOIL Arena. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with four straight victories and enters next Friday's NCHA quarterfinal playoff series against these same RedHawks with a 15-14-5 overall record. UMD, which placed fourth in the final NCHC standings at 11-10-3-1, was unbeaten in its four outings with Miami (15-16-3 overall; 9-13-2-2 NCHC) this winter.

Corrin opened the scoring for UMD 6:44 into the third period when he banged in his own rebound for his first goal in just over a year (March 6, 2015). Miami got the equalizer with 1:47 to go in the second period before Sampair potted his first career-game winner early in the third period, batting down a puck with his left hand and then firing a shot past RedHawk goalie Jay Williams from the left faceoff circle. With Williams pulled for an extra attacker, junior left winger
Alex Iafallo sealed the win with his seventh goal of the season (he's scored UMD's last three empty net goals) at the 19:44 mark of the third period.
Sophomore goaltender
Kasimir Kaskisuo, who backstopped the Bulldogs to a 5-0 triumph Friday for his school record-tying fifth shut out of the season, made 20 saves while improving to 15-13-5 on the year and dropping his goals against average to 1.86.
"We knew Miami really likes to pack it in and doesn't give up many goals so it was important for us to be strong defensively," said Corrin. "We did whatever we could to help Kaz (Kaskisuo) out -- let him see pucks and block shots. To get these two wins, play the way we did and give up just one goal gives us -- and Kaz -- a lot of confidence going into next weekend."
