Sam Hartmann is probably in no real hurry to see this month end -- and understandably so.
The University of Minnesota Duluth junior southpaw has been unbeatable in April, going a perfect 10-0 with the latest of those victories coming Saturday afternoon in the Bulldogs' regular season finale at Minot State University. Hartmann tossed a three-hitter to propel UMD to a 4-0 triumph and salvage a split in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with the Marauders. The Bulldogs, who fell 5-3 in earlier in the day, nevertheless closed out the regular season on a 11-2 run and will go into the postseason sporting a 32-13 overall record and a 21-7 NSIC mark.
In the opener, Minot State (16-29 overall; 5-22 NSIC) generated all of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to terminating UMD's seven-game winning streak. Bulldog sophomore shortstop
Becky Smith went 3-for-4 with one double and scored once while senior third baseman
Sami Schnyder had two of the Bulldogs' sixth hits. UMD trailed 5-1 before sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wright led off the sixth with a solo home run (her fifth of the season). Senior Cayli Sader (13-8), making her 23rd start of the spring, took the loss, giving up six hits and five runs before being lifted for freshman
Valerie Hohol with two outs in the fourth inning.
Hartmann (16-7), who has compiled a 1.57 earned run average with two shutouts over the past 10 outings, struck out seven Marauders in the nightcap on her way to matching her victory total from the previous two years combined (16-18). UMD pounded out nine hits, only one of which went for extra bases -- a double by senior first baseman
Ashley Lewis. Lewis and Schnyder both were 2-for-3 and sophomore center fielder
Hannah Schmoll also chipped in with two hits.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the NSIC Tournament, which starts this Thursday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
